Urbanization and Education in Africa

Africa has rapidly urbanized over the last decades, with 40% of the population now living in an urban environment. However, very little is known about how this urbanization has affected the educational attainment and opportunities of children. One the one hand, cities may increase educational investment by offering higher returns to education and easier access to educational institutions, but on the other hand, may also offer more distractions and the highly visible risk of permanent residence in urban slums with little public service provision. Hence, this project investigates the effect of exposure to cities on educational outcomes of children, using detailed administrative census data on 13 African countries
